There are many different theories of dyslexia, which is probably why there are so many different dyslexia screening tests available. Evolutionary theorists argue that all this reading promoted by Western societies is "unnatural" and has not fully developed yet. Some people say that adults with dyslexia have a "phonological deficit" and trouble retrieving speech sounds. Other scientists argue that dyslexic people can't process quick auditory commands, have trouble with their vision or that the brain has trouble filtering excess stimuli. Perhaps better screening and diagnostic tools can clear up some of this confusion.

Literacy practitioners, while untrained, play a role in diagnosing an adult learning disability. Often they are able to forward adults with dyslexia to appropriate health care professionals. During the screening, the practitioner will ask what their average ability is in some areas but limited in others, if they have poor vision or hearing, are there problems with reading, spelling, writing, handwriting and/or math, and are there certain behaviors or psychological barriers that may impede classroom learning? Next, an adult dyslexia test can be assessed by an educational diagnostician, psychiatrist, psychologist or counselor.

By definition, adult dyslexia is an impairment of the brain's ability to translate images taken in by the eyes into understanding. For children, dyslexia (or specific reading disability) is the most common learning disability, affecting roughly 5% of all elementary-age children. In many cases, working adults may have perfectly normal intelligence, vision and speech, but they may have difficulty interpreting writing or the spoken language at times. Treatment for adults with learning disabilities is often a combination of counseling and multi-sensory education training.
